Lightweight steel-concrete composite slabs were used for the vertical extensions and intermediate floors within the existing structure. Thanks to consistent optimization of the self-weight of the new constructions, reinforcement of the existing columns and foundations could be largely avoided. The existing flat slabs required localized reinforcement for punching shear. Furthermore, the entire building complex was upgraded for seismic resistance through the reinforcement of existing shear walls and the installation of additional shear walls. The existing boiler house was extended vertically from 36 m to a high-rise building of 70 m. The vertical loads from the extension were transferred to the existing column grid via a transfer structure consisting of welded steel frames.
