Rombach Music School and Double Gymnasium, Küttigen
1st prize in competition
The new gymnasium is integrated 3 m to 4 m into the terrain; the earth-contacting components are constructed in solid masonry. Groundwater is limited to the average water level by means of a well point system to avoid tensile forces and anchorages. The foundation is laid directly on rock, selectively using lean concrete pads or short bored piles.
From the ground floor upwards, the building is predominantly designed as a prefabricated timber structure, which enables short construction times, low loads, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The ceiling above the gymnasium is constructed as a timber-concrete composite structure and is suspended from room-high trusses, optimizing the building’s height. The roof is executed as a pure timber construction. The stairwells on the east side provide horizontal bracing.
