Migros High-Rise Herdern, Zurich

As part of the renovation and conversion project, horizontal stability in the transverse and longitudinal directions was restored without affecting the listed appearance of the masonry façades. At the same time, the R90 fire protection requirements were fully implemented and the building services were comprehensively renewed.

1st prize in competition

The 16-storey high-rise was built in the early 1960s by the Migros Zurich Cooperative for its own office use. The listed appearance of the building is characterised by the brick façades.

In 2008, access to the high-rise was supplemented by an entrance tower and a footbridge; since then, access has been via the platform on the south façade on the third floor.

In 2017, condition assessments and structural checks were carried out on the load-bearing end façades due to falling brick fragments. This revealed insufficient horizontal stability in the building’s transverse direction. As an immediate temporary measure, an eight-storey concrete wall was then built in front of the western end wall.

As part of the renovation and conversion project, which has since been completed, the building’s horizontal stability was sustainably restored in both the transverse and longitudinal directions without affecting the listed appearance of the masonry façades. At the same time, the R90 fire protection requirements were fully implemented and the entire building services were comprehensively renewed.

The building continues to be used as an office building by the Migros Zurich Cooperative.
