The second Hinterrhein Bridge complements the existing, heritage-listed truss bridge, completing the double-track expansion of the Chur-Tamins line. The slender steel bridge spans the A13 national highway and the Hinterrhein with a maximum span of 63 m. The rail and road infrastructure, which remained operational during construction, placed high demands on the building process.

Second Hinterrhein Bridge Reichenau

1st prize in competition

The design for the second Hinterrhein Bridge is an elegant, delicate, and contemporary response to an extraordinary location with diverse challenges. A slender steel trough with V-shaped struts rests on simple concrete piers and abutments. In its choice of materials, the new structure takes its cue from the historic steel truss bridge. The choice of materials and careful design of the structural details ensure low operating costs and durability.
