Canopy, Bahnhofplatz Bern

Supported on just 12 columns, the canopy floats above the pedestrian area between the Heiliggeistkirche and the street space. The canopy is designed as a steel-and-glass structure.

New canopy, Bahnhofplatz Bern

Swiss Steel Construction Prize Prix Acier 2009

This steel load-bearing structure consists of welded box girders and flat plates. The glass skin is suspended 20 cm below the supporting system from tertiary beams (flat plates) to create the calmest possible spatial effect. The clear height above street level varies from 3.00 m in the pedestrian area to 10.0 m in the tram area. All beams and columns change their dimensions according to their spans and loads.
